The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety announced Thursday that the Toyota Tundra and the Ford F-150 became the first two full-size pickup trucks to earn the Institute’s highest safety rating in roof strength testing, which measures occupant protection in rollover crashes.
The Tundra and F-150 also earned the Institute's 2011 Top Safety Pick award after earning top ratings in previous front, side, and rear evaluations, and for having electronic stability control, which is standard in both pickups.
The Institute measured roof strength by pushing a metal plate against one corner of a vehicle's roof at a constant speed. The maximum force sustained by the roof before five inches of crush was then compared to the vehicle's weight to find the strength-to-weight ratio. The Institute said this is a good assessment of vehicle structural protection in rollover crashes.
